LITHIUM BATTERY - UPDATING 2017

There have been significant IATA updates concerning the shipment of dangerous goods, including the new mark for lithium battery.
The class 9 hazard label now contains the picture of a battery group in the lower half of it.
The new mark comes into effects as of 1° January 2017 with a 2-year transition period.
Still on the subject of lithium battery, there are some news and guidelines also for “Batteries contained in Equipment”, both for lithium and metal batteries (click at the bottom of this article to download the pdf document).

For what concerns IATA 58th Edition new UN numbers (UN 3528, UN 3529, UN 3530) referring to engines and the new class 9 hazard label for lithium battery, at the moment these provisions do not apply to shipment to and across USA, that’s because the USA Government has temporarily blocked this new provision. About that the 57th Edition provisions shall remain in force.
For this destination shippers should send engines as UN 3166  until 31 March 2017.
