Packagings for Explosives
Any substance or article, having or likely to have explosive properties, shall be considered for assignment to class 1 in accordance with the tests, procedures and criteria set out in part I of the "Manual of Tests and Criteria" published by the United Nations.
Class 1 includes:
A) Solid or liquid explosive substances, which are capable by chemical reaction to develop gases at such a temperature, pressure and speed that damages in the surroundings may result;
Pyrotechnic substances intended to produce a calorific, luminous, audible, gaseous or smoke effect as a result of chemical reactions which are not detonating;
B) Explosive articles containing one or more explosive or pyrotechnic substances;
C) Substances and articles not mentioned above which are manufactured for the purpose of producing a practical explosive or pyrotechnic effect.
Substances or articles of class 1 shall be assigned a UN number, a division and a compatibility group.
The division (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6) shall be established on the basis of the results of the prescribed tests, while the compatibility group shall be determined in accordance with the definitions given in the Dangerous Goods Regulations.
Examples of substances and articles of class 1 are: airbags, demolition charges, cartridges and cartridges for weapons, detonators, fireworks, fuses, rocket engines, ammunition, pyrophoric objects, bullets, flare rockets, warning or smoke signals, torpedoes.
