IMPORTANT CHANGES IN AIR TRANSPORTATION OF LITHIUM BATTERIES

With the new Edition of IATA Manual 2016 important changes in the Packing Instructions concerning the air transportation of Lithium Batteries have been brought about.

In particular, the changes are referred to:

UN 3480 Lithium Ion Batteries PI 965  Section IB

UN 3481 Lithium Ion Batteries packed in equipment PI 966  Section II

UN 3090 Lithium Metal Batteries PI 968 Section IB

UN 3091 Lithium Metal Batteries contained in equipment PI 970 Section II

It will be specified that it is mandatory to use a rigid outer packaging, for instance: fibreboard boxes, wooden boxes, fibre drums.

For UN 3481 / 3091 Lithium Ion (PI966/967) or Metal (PI969/970) Batteries packed or contained in equipment it will be clearly identified what may be considered as “equipment” in order to correctly respect the relevant Packing Instruction.

UN 3481 / 3091 Lithium Ion (PI967) or Metal (PI970) Batteries contained in equipment

A specification will be added concerning the use of the  “Lithium battery handling label” on packagings with lithium batteries “contained in equipment”.

The current Regulation considers the exception from the application of the “Lithium Battery handling label” for packages prepared with no more than 4 cells or 2 batteries.

From 1 January 2016 the handling label will be placed for shipments consisting in more than 2 packages, even if in each package we have no more than 4 cells or 2 batteries.

This change will be adopted in a 1-year period of time.

The new poster on the guidelines concerning the Lithium Batteries shipments is available, up-to-date to the 57th Edition of IATA Manual which will become effective starting from 1 January 2016
