IATA Releases Addendum 1 to the 66th DGR Edition: What’s New for Sodium Batteries?

On April 30, 2025, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) published the first Addendum to the 66th edition of the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), addressing technical issues introduced with the inclusion of sodium-ion batteries (classified as UN 3551 and UN 3552).

Key changes in the Addendum:

  • Corrected Packing Instructions for UN 3551 and UN 3552
  • Updated mandatory marking: from “Lithium Battery Mark” to “Battery Mark”, now also valid for sodium
  • Harmonized documentation and training requirements for both lithium and sodium batteries

These changes require companies handling sodium batteries to promptly update their:

  • operational procedures
  • declaration templates
  • labeling systems
  • staff training programs

Failure to comply could lead to shipment delays, rejections, or non-conformity issues during airport inspections.
